LITTLE PILLARS WRITING PROGRAM

Our inaugural event

-SMYTHE ELEMENTARY, SAN YSIDRO, CA

-200 Students Participated

-36 Bikes awarded to winners

_CONTEST: Write an essay on a problem you see in your community and how can we solve this issue?

Born of a generous donation of bicycles from a local donor, Little Pillars began in 2018 at Smythe Elementary in San Ysidro. With a goal to raise community awareness through writing, we invited 200 3rd grade students to write essays promoting positive changes in their community. This birthing of the program was partnered with a collaboration between Love Thy Neighbor and our partner celebrities, Sonny Sandoval of P.O.D., R&B award winning artist Frankie J, and international wrestling star Rey Mysterio. Of the 36 winners, we were surprised to find out that the 1st place winner was in fact a 2nd grader that was participating in 3rd grade level and performing at the highest in her class. VERY IMPRESSIVE and we were proud to work with her!

ROUND 2

-OUR LADY’S ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, Barrio Logan , CA (San Diego)

-160 Students Participated

-25 Movie tickets awarded to winners

_CONTEST: Write an essay on how you can help the growing homeless community.

To keep the ball rolling we partnered with Our Lady’s Elementary School in Barrio Logan and invited our Friends Sonny Sandoval of P.O.D. , Frankie J, Rey Mysterio, and 160 of their students to participate in an essay contest. At the moment, there was a lot of controversy surrounding a neighboring storage facility and it being converted into a homeless storage facility for the local homeless community’s belongings. To keep these young minds engaged in writing and in community issues, we asked these young minds, “What would you do to help solve the issue with the growing homeless population in San Diego?” It was amazing to read their responses and it also raised the need to follow up with these students over the years to see if they are taking their own advice and working towards a solution. We shall see…
